Book Spotlight: The Waiting Booth by @Brinda_Berry

Mystery
My new life began on a Saturday. It was a life that chose me, which shouldn’t have been surprising. A real shocker would be gliding through my senior year without one more thing to label my life dysfunctional. Most seventeen-year-olds would have called the events a head-on collision. For me, I was merely sideswiped in the journey to find my missing brother.
Saturday mornings were always my favorite. Dad cooked pancakes for the two of us and that day the vanilla-laden smell wafted up the stairs and tugged at my stomach. I bounded downstairs in my shorts and “Geek Chic” T-shirt, sliding around the slick corner reminiscent of the way Tom Cruise did in Dad’s favorite old movie, Risky Business. And he looked up, spatula in hand, with that same welcoming smile full of comfort and familiarity.
I inhaled deeply. “Yum.” I sat down and picked up my fork in anticipation. A golden-brown stack waited on the serving platter.
My dad pulled on my ponytail before taking a seat across from me. He stared at the empty chair to my right. I concentrated on my plate.
We both helped ourselves to generous mounds of pancakes, and then I drizzled enough maple syrup to drive me into a sugar coma. The only sound filling the kitchen was the smacking and fork scraping that indicate true culinary delight.
As usual, my eyes were bigger than my stomach. I shook my head woefully at the butter- and syrup-laced masterpiece I was abandoning. I rose and cleared my plate from the table.
“Hold up. You in a hurry?” Dad asked.
“Gotta go get my memory cards out of the cameras outside and see if I got anything recorded,” I answered in between licking my sticky lips.
I slipped on my tennis shoes and went for the door.
“Leaving Biscuit here?” Dad looked down.
My cairn terrier sat expectantly at Dad’s feet. Biscuit wagged his stubby tail when he heard his name. I grinned at his pitiful face, black button eyes hopeful for a few stray crumbs.

“Yeah, I’ll be right back. He can stay with you.” Biscuit looked from Dad to me before settling his chin on his paws.
I ran out the door and hopped into the old golf cart that sat in the garage. Even though I had gotten my license last year, I still preferred the golf cart for these errands. The aging motor started immediately and then I was off. I puttered down the long gravel driveway toward the highway.
The early morning air was crisp, and the sun hadn’t risen high enough to warm the areas beneath the canopy of oak trees. Enjoying my time alone in the woods, I breathed in the fragrant air. The smells of pine and cedar and the sounds of stirring intensified all the green colors of the leaves. But that was how I always saw things. The doctors had diagnosed my older brother as also having synesthesia.

Book Spotlight: Louisa by Richard Emmel

Book Excerpt

Chapter 6—Becoming a Woman
Ages 13—18
It seemed like just yesterday I celebrated my seventh birthday. I remember the talk that led to my being declared seven. Because I was so small, the
Wheatleys wanted to make me younger than seven. I did not talk well and was a slave. I stood silent as seven became my given age. Using that first birthday as a benchmark today, April 15, 1766, I can say I am thirteen. As of today, I have served the Wheatley family for six years, but I also have been served, because I got to use their library, and they allowed me to write.

I was only thirteen, but often left by myself to watch over the house. The Wheatleys thought that the slaves might steal some of their valuables while they were away. I sensed trouble the minute I opened the door for Tom Carlyle, a friend of Nat’s, but instead of telling Tom that Nat was not at home, I allowed—perhaps even encouraged— him to enter and sit in the parlor.

I wanted to be sociable, but I knew I could not socialize with Tom. Slaves did not associate with white people. Yet, something inside of me said Tom was a young man not much older than I, and nothing would be wrong if we talked. I longed to talk with him or any young man for that matter, so there I stood, not knowing what to do or say and wishing I had told Tom that the Wheatleys were not home.

Tom saw that we were alone, and he knew the Wheatleys would not return until tomorrow. Then he told me he had hidden his gold cuff links in the house during his visit the previous night. He said that unless I gave him the key to the silver cabinet, he would accuse me of stealing the cuff links and the silver pitcher he wanted.

He told me that if I cooperated with him, he would give me a forty-dollar bill, an amount that seemed like a small fortune. Mr. Revere made the silver pitcher for my mistress, and I had never seen another quite as beautiful. I could understand why Tom would do anything to get it. Something
I call my “knower” was screaming inside me not to take part in this evil scheme. I also knew that any slave accused of stealing was usually hanged without a trial.

Tom thought he had set a perfect trap and would emerge from the Wheatley home with the prized silver pitcher. I faced the ugly reality of trying to explain its disappearance. Tom told me that the Wheatleys were so rich that they would just accept its loss and wouldn’t suspect their favorite slave of stealing. He never expected what happened next.

This is a very educational book which gives a lot of insight into the lives of slaves back in the time of slavery. I always new that the slaves were terribly mistreated but I didn’t think it was so bad. This would make an excellent resource for a classroom or home school family. This is a must read book for Black History month. 5 -Star review by K. Vetrano, Amazon

Book Spotlight: Rescued from the Dark @Lynda_Kaye Frazier

The Buzz

In Rescued from the Dark by Lynda Kaye Frazier, FBI  Counterterrorism agent, Jason Michaels is working undercover to take down one of the FBI’s most wanted Irish militant  groups, which is run by The Flannigan’s. But the deeper he goes, the more he finds that there is a lot more on the line than  just some gun shipments and drugs. They want Mercy—his Mercy. They will stop at nothing to get her, and he’s running out of time to save her…Obviously, I really enjoyed the book. –  Taylor, reviewer

I was intrigued right from the get-go…I thought Frazier’s characterizations were realistic, her plot believable and  intriguing, and her writing well done for a first time author. I especially liked that her heroes were flawed and human and, that while her villains were extra slimy, they believed in what  they were doing. That is always a sign of a good villain. – Regan, reviewer

Book Spotlight: Texas Two Step @CynthiaDAlba

Book Excerpt

The woman stood on tiptoe in the baggage-claim area of the Dallas/Fort Worth airport looking for all the world like someone who’d been sent to collect the devil. Mitch Landry had expected Wes or one of the other groomsmen to come for him. Instead, his gaze found a statuesque blonde arching up on her toes, a white T-shirt with Jim’s Gym in black script stretched across her lushly curved breasts and long tanned legs extending from tight denim shorts. His heart stumbled then roared into a gallop.

Blood rushed from his brain to below his waist. His nostrils flared in a deep breath, as though he could smell her unique fragrance across the crowded lobby.

She hadn’t looked in his direction yet, which gave him an unfettered opportunity to study her without having to camouflage his reactions.

No make-up covered her creamy rose complexion, not that she needed any. Not then and not now. No eye shadow was required to bring out the deep blue of her eyes. Nor did her mouth need any enhancement. Her lips radiated a natural pink, although the bottom one grew redder as her upper teeth gnawed on it.

Six years had passed since he’d seen Olivia Montgomery, but he’d swear she was more beautiful today. She had an appeal that came only with age and maturity. A smile edged onto his mouth. He was surprised—pleasantly surprised—to admit how glad he was to see her.

He watched as her glare bounced around the room, searching faces until it fell on him. As a look of resignation flashed across her face, she frowned.

His smile faded. Not exactly the reaction he’d hoped for.

The Buzz

Texas Two Step kept me on an emotional roller coaster, there were moments I wanted Mitch and Olivia together and moments I wanted her to kick him in his junk. Olivia is a strong women, who right or wrong, made some tough decisions and is now paying the price for them. Mitch is a determined man, who bless his sexy lil’ soul, had to admit he was wrong. He finally sees the light and destroys his douchebag crown for good and ends up being a man dreams are made of. 5 -Star review by Guilty Pleasures, Goodreads

Why Texas Two Step is a Red Hot Read: I’m notoriously picky about romances set in Texas, as I’m sure anyone feels about their home state. To my thought, very few writers who aren’t from Texas (and some who are) portray Texas as anything but a stereotype. In Texas Two Step, Cynthia D’Alba’s hero Mitch is a rancher, but he’s more than the stereotypical cowboy.

Six years ago, his love affair with Olivia circled the drain because of Mitch’s misguided loyalty to his brother. Now, he wants Olivia back. But it’s going to take a lot more than a simple “I’m sorry” to win her over because all those years ago he left Olivia with something more than just a broken heart. Ms. D’Alba does a fabulous job with an emotionally charged reunion story and the does justice to both big-city and small-town Texas. 5 -Star review by Kelsey Browning, Goodreads

Book Spotlight: Through the Open Door @HilChaney

Book Excerpt

The next day I went to work. I was distracted, and again I could not eat. I was tired, but energized. I felt sharp, wired, caffeinated. As I lay down to bed that night, I wondered where my mind was going. It felt unharnessed, like it had jumped its tracks. Racing thoughts … spinning gears … the documents in my brain’s hard drive were shuffling and re-shuffling like a deck of cards.

I went to work on Wednesday having had no sleep since Sunday night. I kept reassuring myself that it was no big deal. People operated on little or no sleep all the time, right?

I actually felt pretty effective at work. Multitasking came naturally. At 2:45 a.m. that day, I got into my car and drove to Capital One and worked for a good two hours at a frantic pace. That was the last I saw of Capital One for over a month.

On Thursday, which marked four days with no sleep, I began having bizarre thoughts. I felt like I was very close to Jesus and God. In my sleep-deprived state, I wondered if perhaps I was Jesus? Surely the lack of sleep was playing tricks on me. How crazy it sounds to say you feel like Jesus! But to be sure, I felt a huge capacity for love, and a tremendous empathy for those around me. All the while, my mind continued to race and leap and somersault in a hundred different directions.

“And you’re not going to make me sleep with you?”

He shrugged and made himself maintain eye contact when what he wanted to do was look anywhere but at her. Damn. Her voice was a little tight and high with that last question. Now what had he done wrong? He didn’t think he’d ever understand women.

“Right.” He dragged the word out. “No obligation.”

She drained her beer. The empty bottle dangled from the tips of her fingers. The side of her cheek sucked as she rolled it between her teeth.

“So no sex. That’s what you’re saying? I just want to make sure there are no misunderstandings this time.”

He nodded. “Sure.”

She echoed his nod and then set her bottle on the floor. “Well then, in that case, no.”

His head popped back. “What?”

Leaning toward him, she said, “No sex, no trip.”

This time, he swallowed hard. Crossed and uncrossed his legs. Adjusted his position on the sofa. “Explain exactly what you’re saying. Use small words and short sentences. I don’t think my mind is hearing correctly this afternoon.”

“Here’s the deal, Doc. I want a vacation with the five S’s. Sand. Surf. Sun. Spa. And sex.” She leaned back in her chair. “And not necessarily in that order.”

“So you want to sleep with me?”

“I want a two-week torrid, scorching-hot affair. No holds barred. Then, we walk away. No harm. No foul. Those are my terms.” She stared into his eyes. “Take it or leave it.”
